Kevin Gates, otherwise known as Kevin Jerome Gilyard (we can see why he went for Gates) has been writing and rapping since literally the 7th grade- with a tough upbringing and a true soldier of the streets, Gates’s career truly took off after his jailtime came to an end, however through time and trouble, the spitter has been hustlin’- a true player of the game.
As a proud owner of a Masters Degree in Psychology, Kevin Gates has used his understanding to curve lyrics around square beats and drop some truly phenomenal music in his time. With a selection of mixtapes that caught eyes from Birdman to Atlantic, The Luca Brasi Story received top praise from Pitchfork saying it "imbues trap's claustrophobic bleakness with an emotional nakedness, capable lyricism, and melodic certitude many of its recent breakout stars have lacked."
Coming up in 2014 as a member of the XXL freshman class, Gates carried on to surmount a number of controversies and legal issues, dropping Luca Brasi 2 with his famed “I Don’t Get Tired” and later “Islah” that would gain him even more acclaim.
Gate’s hip hop style remains pure and simple- a man in and out of jail doesn’t have need of major flash, he lets his demeanor and beats do the talking for him. With a clean iced out pendant collection, Gates can be seen out with his iced out chains and bling bling diamond stud earrings.
Today, Gates is out of jail and assumedly enjoying time with his wife and their child- word is Gates is working on his next big project, Chained to the City, which is due out sometime in 2018.
